Rediscovering Yourself Through Empowering Photography: When You’ve Lost Touch with Who You Used to Be

There comes a moment, sometimes in the middle of folding laundry or staring at the mirror, when you pause and wonder… Where’s the woman I used to be? Where did she go?

If you’ve ever felt this way, you’re not alone and self-discovery photography might be the gentle invitation you need to reconnect with yourself. It’s one of the most common feelings I hear from women who walk into my studio for an empowering photography session, carrying invisible weights and wondering when they stopped recognising themselves.

The Woman You Used to Be

Remember her? The one who had passions that set her soul on fire and hobbies that made hours disappear like minutes. Who danced barefoot in the kitchen just because a favourite song came on the radio. Who laughed louder, rested more, and dreamed so much bigger than the box life seems to have put her in.

She was fearless in ways that feel foreign now. She took risks, spoke her mind, and didn’t apologise for taking up space in the world.

But over time, something shifted. You poured so much of yourself into others: held families together, juggled multiple jobs, wiped away tears, carried emotional loads that weren’t always yours to bear. You became the glue that kept everything from falling apart.

But in all that giving, all that holding together, all that carrying… who’s been holding you?

The Subtle Loss of Self

This isn’t about dramatic life changes or major trauma (though those can certainly contribute). Sometimes it’s the slow, steady erosion of self that happens when you’re busy being everything to everyone else.

It’s the gradual silencing of your own voice in favour of keeping peace.

It’s postponing your dreams until “someday.”
It’s saying “I’m fine” when you’re not.
It’s looking in the mirror and not recognising the woman staring back.

You might catch glimpses of her, your former self, in old photos or when a certain song plays. There’s a pang of recognition mixed with grief. Where did she go? And more importantly, can she come back?

She’s Not Lost, Just Waiting to Be Seen

Here’s what I’ve learned through years of photographing women who felt invisible: she’s not gone.

She’s been waiting patiently underneath all the roles and responsibilities you’ve accumulated. She’s in the way you still hum while cooking, in the split second before you catch yourself dancing, in the dreams you haven’t quite let go of completely.

The woman you used to be isn’t lost. She’s simply been living in the shadows, waiting for permission to step back into the light. That’s where photography for self esteem becomes more than just images. It becomes a mirror reflecting back the woman who’s always been there.

How Women’s Empowerment Portraits Bring Her Back

There’s something powerful and transformative that happens when you step in front of a camera with the intention of seeing yourself, really seeing yourself, again. Not as someone’s mother, partner, employee, or caregiver, but as the complex, beautiful, deserving woman you are. Self-discovery photography creates this sacred space for reconnection.

It Creates Space

An empowering photography session is about creating a space that’s entirely yours. No one else’s needs to consider, no one else’s schedule to accommodate. For a few hours, it’s just about you, your comfort, your expression, your story. Just space to feel, to breathe, to reconnect. It’s not indulgent, it’s essential.

It Challenges Your Inner Critic

That voice that whispers “You’re too old,” “You’re not photogenic,” “Who are you to do this?”

Photography for self esteem can silence that voice.

Because when you see yourself through someone else’s lens, someone who sees your worth, you start to see it too. These women’s empowerment portraits become mirrors that reflect back your true beauty and strength. Through empowering photography, you begin to witness yourself with compassion instead of criticism.

It Captures Who You Are Right Now

Not who you used to be, not who you think you should be, but who you are in this moment. And often, she’s even more extraordinary than you thought. Women’s empowerment portraits honour exactly where you are in your journey, without judgment or expectation.

The Ripple Effect of Being Seen

When you reclaim your sense of self, when you remember what it feels like to be seen and valued for who you are, it changes everything.

You show up differently in your relationships.

You set boundaries you’ve been afraid to set.

You rediscover what brings you joy.

In fact, creative expression through photography has been shown to support emotional healing, confidence, and personal growth, especially in women experiencing life transitions. (Exploring the Therapeutic Value of Photography as a Wellbeing Tool’)

Your children see a mother who values herself. Your partner sees someone who radiates confidence. But most importantly, you see a woman who deserves to take up space, to be celebrated, to remember her own worth.

Permission to Be Found Again

If these words are ringing true… this is your permission slip.
To be curious about the woman you used to be.
To miss her.
To go looking for her.

You’re not just a supporting character in everyone else’s story.
You are the main character in your own.

Ready to Rediscover Her?

An empowering photography session isn’t about vanity or superficial beauty. It’s about self-discovery photography, a visual excavation of the layers you’ve had to carry. A way to document not only your strength but your tenderness too.

Photography for self esteem helps you see what others have always seen: a woman who is worthy, beautiful, and deserving of celebration. These women’s empowerment portraits become keepsakes of your courage, tangible proof that you chose to see yourself with love.

Because the woman you used to be?
She’s not gone. She’s been waiting. And you deserve to meet her again.

Have you felt this disconnect from your former self? What would it mean to you to rediscover that woman again? I’d love to hear your story and help you find your way back to her through the power of empowering photography.

Moments like this are the gems in a session. They don’t always come.

But when they do, I’m ready.

No AI image could give you this. Maybe a fake photo, but without the lived experience, it’s just another pretty picture.

Dad saw the smile happen. Mum was watching them both. It was real, and it lasted only a few seconds.

The print is what lets you relive it forever

Not just a digital file, something tangible, after something real.

What’s a moment you wish you had a print of?

I’m definitely not a poet. I’ve never called myself a writer.
I’m a photographer.

But these lines came out of me almost on their own during the breastfeeding project. As if they’d been waiting for a page.

This is the third and last part.
Thank you for reading it with me. I hope you enjoyed it.

If you missed the other 2 parts check the previous reels.

Part two of the poem I wrote while working on Milk Tales. If you missed part one, it’s on my page, or click on the reel.

It’s a raging storm,
and the calm sea at dusk.
It’s the sun that tempts you,
the rain that breaks you.

It’s burning fire
that stirs what words can’t say.
It’s a path of discovery,
lit in your own way.

A journey that strips you bare,
but clothes you in new grace.
Each drop of milk
a vow you won’t erase.

Third and last one coming soon. Don’t miss it.

While I was working on my breastfeeding personal project a few years ago, a poem slowly grew in me, written in Italian.

This is the translated version, which became part of Milk Tales, a book of photography and stories from 25 mothers, including my own.

I never shared the poem publicly, until now.
Part one of three. Follow for more.
Nobody tells you that the last weeks of pregnancy are also the last weeks of being just you.

You’re not quite a mother, yet. But you’re not quite yourself anymore either.

Somewhere in between, carrying a whole person you haven’t met.

This is the photo of the woman you were, right before.

Before the sleepless nights. Before you start disappearing, just a little, into someone else’s story for a while.

If you’re in it right now, I’d love to capture it for you.
