To keep growing as a newborn and maternity photographer, submitting images to competitions is quite a big thing. There are several photographers’ associations that run monthly competitions.
Each covers different categories, and you’re allowed to enter one image per category per month. The judges are some of the most esteemed Fellow, Master and Grand Master photographers in the UK and across the world.
One month I sent a couple of images to National Photographic Society and was thrilled to get a Gold Award in the category Pregnancy and Babies.

I also received a highly commended award for another image from the same session!

When I told my client that her image won an award she was very excited and felt like a model. You can read the full story of that session here, it was a shoot she booked entirely for herself.
I don’t enter competitions every month. I know it helps me grow, but sometimes I forget, and sometimes I don’t feel my images are strong enough.
But I do deliver images to my clients every month, and their feedback matters to me even more than an award.
“I have been admiring the photos every day! What a good job you have done and I am really glad to have the photography session with you!”
Receiving a text the day after a session that says “Thanks so much for the session, it was great fun” makes my work feel appreciated. I know these are small things, but as a working mum running a small business, they’re huge.
I have to admit, being able to call myself a London award-winning maternity photographer feels pretty awesome, and it makes me proud of my work.
